Marketing = selling stuff

Discover and give customers what they need

Jerome McCarthy

·         Price

·         Product

·         People

·         Place

·         Promotion

These are the fundamentals of marketing

You need to figure out the wants, needs and desires of people

80% of business fails within the first year

Begin with consumers: is anyone interested in my product?

·         Product

o   Quality, colour and aesthetics

·         Price

o   Magazine pays for goods/ profits

o   Sets quality expectations

o   Segments and audience

o   Who can buy it

o   How will it be consumed

·         Place

o   How and where can you buy it?

o   Distribution, expectation, exclusivity

o   i.e. argos vs apple store

o   care and attention to details

·         promotion

o   ways you choose to promote

o   Advertising, pr, events, word of mouth, social media?

·         People

o   Customers

o   Understand attitudes and motivations

o   Begin market research

o   Secondary and primary

o   What makes people different?

o   Why should brands fail?

§  Why is there a gap in the market here? Has it already failed?

The marketing mix

What applies to what I want to sell?

Product, sales, market, consumer, finance?

Consider well marketed brands i.e. Jay Z, Apple etc

Where do they/ I fit into Malsow’s hierarchy of needs?

·         Consider marketing from here

The influencers

Most successful people have a different way of thinking and expressing themselves

Embracing all aspects of culture

Creative and invent things

Influencers on culture

Influence is all relative #

·         Malcolm gladwell- the tipping point

·         Bill Cunningham- youth culture

·         Places people assemble with passion
